James "Jim" Clayton

James “Jim” Clayton, lovingly known to so many as “Uncle Jim,” entered the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 24, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on May 5, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Jim lived a life defined by unwavering faith, genuine kindness, and an abiding love for his family. Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Carol, the love of his life and faithful partner in ministry. Together they built a Christ-centered home and shared a lifetime devoted to serving the Lord. He is survived by his children, James Junior, Tracy, and Robin, and by his brother, Jerry Clayton. A natural athlete, Jim loved sports throughout his life. Baseball was a favorite, but basketball held a special place in his heart. Whether playing, watching, or talking about the game, his enthusiasm was contagious. Jim met Carol while attending Bible school in New York. When Carol brought him home to meet her family, he immediately formed a special bond with her brother, Lee Freeman. What began as a first meeting grew into a treasured friendship, and Lee remained Jim’s best friend throughout his life. An ordained minister, Jim faithfully served in jail ministries throughout Florida and Tennessee, preaching the Gospel and reminding countless individuals that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. He was also a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Strawberry Plains, where he faithfully worshiped and served for as long as his health allowed. Those who knew Jim will remember his warm smile, his servant’s heart, and the way he made everyone feel like family. Whether you were related by blood or simply blessed to know him, chances are he invited you to call him “Uncle Jim.” Above all else, Jim wanted to be remembered for two things: his love for his family and his love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. His greatest desire was to see others come to know Christ. His life was a testimony of faithfulness, compassion, and steadfast commitment to the Lord. While his family grieves his absence, they rejoice in the assurance that Jim has been reunited with his beloved wife and is now in the presence of the Savior he faithfully loved and served. His race is finished, his faith has become sight, and his greatest joy is now complete. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 29th at Fielden Funeral Home in New Market from 11:00 AM until Noon. The funeral service will be held at Noon with Rev. Tracy Clayton and Rev. Tony Hayes will officiate. Following the funeral a procession will be held to Westview Cemetery for a graveside service.
